Abstract AM I? ( follows AI consciousness researcher Cameron Berg as he investigates one of the most difficult questions raised by today's artificial intelligence: Could an AI actually have conscious experience? The film explores how we might distinguish consciousness from sophisticated behavior, whether we can trust what AI systems say about their own experience, and what kinds of evidence could ever justify claims about machine consciousness. It also raises a more troubling question: What if we get it wrong? Consciousness Club Tokyo invites you to a special screening of AM I?, followed by a conversation with Cameron Berg(joining remotely), Milo Reed, director of the film, and neuroscientist Ryota Kanai. After the screening, they will discuss the questions raised by the film from the perspectives of AI consciousness research, filmmaking, neuroscience, and consciousness science. Program 17:30-18:00 — Doors Open 18:00–18:05 — Opening Remarks 18:05–19:45 — Screening of AM I? and Live Conversation Cameron Berg(online) × Milo Reed × Ryota Kanai 19:45–20:00 — Audience Q&A 20:00–20:30 — Optional Networking Speakers Cameron Berg AI Consciousness Researcher | Founder & Director, Reciprocal Research Cameron Berg is the founder and director of Reciprocal Research, a nonprofit dedicated to empirically investigating whether AI systems are conscious. He has presented at the UN and internationally at major conferences, and contributed to White House AI policy discussions, with research covered in the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, and Live Science. Cameron is a cognitive science graduate of Yale, former research director of AE Studio, and a former Meta AI resident. Milo Reed Director, AM I? Milo Reed is a producer and co-host of the largest podcast dedicated to AI consciousness. AM I? is his directorial debut, produced, shot, and directed over one year of embedded access to the researchers, philosophers, and technologists at the forefront of this scientific mystery. Milo studied philosophy and film at Yale. Ryota Kanai, PhD Founder & CEO of Araya, Inc. Project Manager of Moonshot Research & Development Program Ryota Kanai is a neuroscientist working at the intersection of consciousness science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. After conducting research in cognitive neuroscience at institutions including Utrecht University, Caltech, and University College London, he founded Araya in 2015. His current work explores the computational and neural principles underlying consciousness and their implications for artificial intelligence. Consciousness Club Tokyo Consciousness Club Tokyo is an interdisciplinary community led by Ryota Kanai of Araya. The club brings together researchers and practitioners from philosophy, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, complex systems, computer science, robotics, and related fields to foster open discussion and deepen understanding of consciousness. Venue KERNEL HONGO KERNEL is a members-only, invitation-based startup community where entrepreneurs, C-suite leaders, researchers, and engineers connect and collaborate.
